Common Name: Sonoran Desert Toad

Ritual Use: Use of the Sonoran desert toad as a psychoactive agent dates back to the Mesoamerican period. The glands were either licked directly off the toads ventral side or 'milked' onto a piece of wood. In the latter case flecks of dried gland are chiseled off the wood and placed into a mix with tobacco and smoked.

Modern Administration Methods: Rather than licking the toad (which yields an unknown amount of bufotenine) most choose to milk the toad onto a mirror and, about an hour later, chip the dried secretions off and store in an airtight container. The resulting extremely small flakes are then placed on top of a bowl of cannabis packed in a water-pipe.

Strong visual and auditory hallucinations begin seconds after inhalation. They can last to up to half an hour but usually subside within 15 minutes. While under the influence of bufotenine, a feeling of euphoria is often experienced, as well as a sense of strong connection between the user and the earth. After effects leave one with a warming glow of happiness and compassion.
